Well I dynoed my street car yesterday at SEVWA's dyno day and my 2332cc pump gas engine I built made 165hp to the rear wheels and 167 ft lb torque. I was happy, gained 14 hp over last year from a few modifications.
THEN, today at the track I went to make my first pass and launched her at around 5000 and it spun and then bit hard snatching up on the front end when all of the sudden it popped out of 1st gear, I said oh s*** so I grabbed 2nd, nothing but grinding, went to 3rd and then 4th and limped down the track.
I was for sure I broke something major. Now I only have 1st and 2nd if I hold it in gear, let go of shifter and it pops out. 3rd and 4th work just fine.

What does this sound like to you guys and gals??

I was so excited, went 12.72 @ 104 on street radials last year and with a 14 hp increase this year I was hoping to get her on down to the mid or low 12s and I made it 20ft and broke.

possible mainshaft failure.  Probably missing a few teeth now.  Been there, done that.  Makes a bunch of noise too! Tongue

It made a lot of noise. Where i'm confused is if it was the mainshaft and all this happened in 1st gear then how did 2nd break too. I drove the car back on the trailer in 1st but I had to hold it in gear.

That 20 ft was looking good.

Might be the headlight fluid?

yeah it sure came out of the hole caveman. I was headed for a 11 second quarter mile.  Grin
All I remember is the rear of the car squating hard and the front end stretching out and just when I was about to go to grab 2nd I heard a gosh awful noise and I remember hearing myself say oh S*** Son of a B****
I guess super beetle mainshafts don't like 165 rear wheel hp. Just can't believe it happened on 195/65 Kuhmo street radials with 18psi.
Could've been worse I guess.

So guys say this happens to be my mainshaft. What do I need to upgrade to and how much do they cost? I don't want to have to go through this again. It sucks because this event I went to is like one of a couple times a year I even go to the track and I only had about 10 passes total on this tranny. (of course there has been a lot of rubber laid down on the street from showing out.)

recomended to me was a weddle mainshaft with a 3.75 first, less teeth so stronger. I am going to try to push 260 hp through it.

I doubt it was the mainshaft. More like a slider problem. Or a broken hub.
My guess is that you broke a syncro and had the keys and clips fall out of place and are just floating around in there.
Same with the Hub, if it broke, the keys and clips are floating around the same.

This would create the symptoms you describe. Easy fix.

I have race a SB mainshaft for years on 6" slicks running 10.80's.
They will take alot more that you dished out.

Thanks Tom! makes me feel a lot better. I was worried that it was the mainshaft. I can't really afford an Erco or Weddle mainshaft and I was kind of worried about how much an SB mainshaft can handle. If it can handle slicks and 10.80s then I should be fine with street tires, KEP stage 1 clutch and stock rigid disk.
I also couldn't see how it would be the mainshaft when I can drive the car on the trailer if I hold it in gear.

Well done on the HP increase.

What changes did you make to gain 14hp?
