Oil cooler

Just curious if oil circulates through the stock oil cooler at all times or is it completely bypassed? I figured a small amount goes through it at all times.
The reason I asked is because I am going to try running a non doghouse Scat shroud and use one of those oil cooler adaptors that does away with the stock cooler and has fittings to run an external cooler into. I have a 96 pass mesa with fan/thermostat I am going to use. I was afraid if oil didn't circulate through there at all times that when the temps did go up and the bypass plunger closed then there would be a void there with an oil cooler that didn't have any oil in it thus causing oil starvation. (am I over thinkin this?) I could keep stock cooler and run lines from my filter but I am trying to avoid having 10 feet of oil lines. More chance of failure if you ask me.
Just a project I want to try and see if it helps with engine temps.

Have you already tried running the cooler inline with your filter lines?  (i.e., your full-flow setup).  Probably wouldn't be much more line to route.
