I finally got around and ordered new tires for the 74. The old tires are Pirelli P6000 195/60-15 all around. They're 10 years old, hard and easy to spin. I just ordered a set of BFGoodrich g-Force Sport with 195/55-15 front and 205/60-15 rear. My alloys were painted and i'm gonna have them stripped and powder painted before mounting the new tires.

I'm hoping they do. They should help in the corners and off the line.

I think you'll be very happy with the tire sizes front to rear. Post up some pics when its all mounted up.

It won't be till the Spring. When I first rebuilt the car the project got out of hand so I saved some money by only having the outside of the rims media blasted and painted. Now I want to blast the entire wheel and have them powder painted.
I'll be putting some stock rims on with my old Michelin XAS fronts and Michelin X Snows on the rear. I bet they'd spin real easy but thery're 30 years old and i'd most likely rip them apart.

One thing to check with new tires is how true they run. It seems that the older tires had less problems and ran with little balancing needed. If a tire looks wobbly on the tire machine you should be able to get a better one to replace it.

How is your front lowered? Spindles or beam adjustment?
I'm wondering because I've got CB drop spindles and need a new beam, I love the way your car sits and I'd like to run a wider tire in the front like the 195/55s you are getting ready to use. I might loose the spindles and go with an adjustable beam and if you have any recommendations on a beam, I'm open for them.
Thank you.

Stock width beam, stock Ghia disc spindles, SAW "lowered" sway bar, AVIS adjusters. The "trick" is the Porsche/Pedrini alloys, they're ET42 so the wheels sit deeper than with a VW (ET34) wheel. Here's with my current; 195/60-15. I went to a 55 series to help with some very minor rubbing on road with dips.

Nice... I'm running 195/50 up front (drop spindles), and 205/65 in the back on my '68, I drive it every day and the road feel is VERY good...

I've had them on for only 100 miles and they handle really nice. They do spin pretty easily but i'm hoping the get stickier once I have more miles on them and it gets warmer.

How is the change in ride quality? I just changed out my 10-ish year old tires and noticed an improvement in ride quality (no surprise) with the newer rubber. Of course moving to a lower profile may offset that.
I had that exact same combination on my '71 Super Beetle Convertible 20 years ago and it handled really well.

The ride is nicer. My "old" tires were really old... 13 years old with about 35,000 miles. They were hard and i felt handling suffered. The new ones seem smoother and have plenty of grip in the turns. I've yet to drift through a clover leaf ramp but I have hit a few hard and the car didn't break loose (yet).
I'm very happy that going from a 60 series to a 55 series in the front eliminated the slight rubbing when taking corners hard and on high speed dips in the road. I'd just like the car to jump more when I take off than spin. but I hope once I have 1000 miles and temps get up to the 70s they will get stickier.

But that big, expensive Berg 5 speed is happier with a little bit of tire spin off the line
