Sad to say i just opened up the cardboard box containing my new unused mag case which i have had in my garage for the last 4 years and found corrosion on most of the mating surfaces no doubt caused by moisture.
The bearing saddles and pretty much every cut and shiny area has either dulled off to a mat finish or has a certain amount of darkening with obvious corrosion. Thank god these areas are not pitted just discolored some with a slight oxide dusty film.
Whats the best method of cleaning these corroded areas? I was going to use wd40 with a 0000 steel wool and a light rub.. Any better suggestions?

A little magnesium oxide is not going to kill the build.
Just clean it up & some will spray the whole case with WD40 if it is not going to be used for a while.
Mag cases should have a greenish coating on them, but that stuff gets washed off when going through machining & clean up.

Thanks for your help and advice guys. I do recall my friend soda blasting his case and it came up great. I think i will soda blast all the corrosion off and then wd40 the case before i store it again for my future project.

Just give it a few wipes with scotch-brite pad and some solvent (Kerosene).
Clean right up easy..

WD40 is not a good long term protectant, as it "goes away" in a relatively short amount of time.

It would be better to use a solvent/parafin based product like Boeshield, or LPS3.
