I was at a VW shop yesterday. While in the shop I noticed a cal -look bug take off with a single ( larger looking muffler) hanging off his header. It sounded awesome! Kinda like that V8 sound you get with flowmasters and all the cube's of a V8 behind it.
Any body got any comments on which muffler is the BEST sounding muffler to hang off the back of my 1 5/8" four-tuned exhaust?
I am kinda tired of the dual mufflers any way.
I would like to see if there is a universal agreement on a good sounding muffler.

Hmmm, always a tough call because it is so subjective.
My view (for what it's worth) based on my experience:
- I hate loud cars. Any car can be loud - just go buy your favourite fart can exhaust and join the Honda or Subaru WRX crowd - but only a properly tuned HP engine sounds, well, like a properly tuned HP engine
- I don't want any muffler that drowns out the wonderful sound of the aircooled fan or the beautiful induction music of my IDAs
With that out of the way, my experience:
1. I ran the typical Super Turbo (what a ridiculous name) large can type single muffler for years, and didn't like it. Maybe in my 20s, but not, well, middle-aged. Too loud.
2. I hate Dynomax mufflers. Much too loud and buzzy. I've driven a sweet '67 Cal-Look car with one and it literally gave me a headache.
3. I've driven a lot of cars with Glasspacks, and don't like them. Too noisy, and the glasspacking envitaby fails, puking it out the tailpipe. All noise, no HP.
4. The muffler type I've returned to again and again over the last 25 years is a single Quiet Pack-type muffler. I ran a "tuck-away" type for years in the early 1990s, that sounded great and was hidden, but I didn't like removing it to adjust the #1 and #2 valves. I'm currently running a single Berg Quiet Pack and love it. Smooth, not too loud, and it sounds great when you get into, partly because you can still hear the carbs and fan. My engine also ran better with it (smoother in the lower RPMs) vs. the Super Turbo single muffler. A little back pressure on the street can be good. It also looks clean, and is not too conspicuous. Plus, it's a traditional Cal-Look muffler (if that means anything to you).
Of course all of this changes with the engine and state of tune. The single Quiet Pack sounds much different on a stock-ish 1600 versus a 2110 IDA engine.
My 1.5 cents, guaranteed to only be meaningful to me.

- I agree I use 3 diferent 1.- big bugpack muffler- nice and quiet 2.- turbo muffler- from time to time, noisy 3.- stinger- only for drag- but I love it

A-1 3 inch magna flow muffler hooked up to a 2.3 litre 48 weber fed type 1 engine......pure music to the ears at idle and spiritual at 6000rpm

I love my S&S Dual quiet packs!!!! Love the sound and the look. There's just that empty space back there on the bottom and the duals fill it in soooooo nicely!!! I had a single magnaflow and hated it!!! It always drug on the driveway! Their too fat top to bottom to allow for flow. Gary, the oval looks awesome!!!! Thats one sweet car!

Flowmaster all the way. They use a special multi chamber design that removes all resonance at any rpm (buzzy fart can sound). They are not just packed with fiberglass that blows out after a while. Plus you can buy them in any loudness you like. They have one for all ears. I put one on my Porsche 944 (2.5L 4cyl). Sounds awesome and can still hear the sterio just fine. Folks comment on how it sounds just idling and driving easy around town. Plus they flow great. Worth the money/time to make it work IMO...
However, (not to offend anyone).my favorite sound is that of a fat turbo motor with an elbow off the turbo only. Lumpy idle, throaty. Plus, it's not that loud when you stand on it. Sounds baddass and turns heads everywhere. Forget the radio thou. Hard-core cruising only. That's OK since I live an area where tons of straight pipe custom hard tale bikes run around w/o any ameities too. I have seen guys drive thier Pro-Mod's to cruise-in's. Ohio has some loose requirements for a "street car". So, having a loud baddass car for having short/fun cruises makes the noise tolerable.

Funny to hear that Dynomax is loud and annoying... I went from a flowmaster to a dynomax (much quieter) and loved the smooth rumble... I put the same 3" dynomax on my turbo and it extremely quiet...

I've never heard a Dynomax that was buzzy, per say... it was always the Magnaflows that I thought sounded kind of ricey.

try go on you tube and type in cool sounding muffler and look for cool sounding muffler part 2 and 3 and it is a 3in flowmaster that was done at night. Not the best but wen loud it sound cool.

Loved the burble that my old S and S Headers dual quiet pack gave on the mild 1641 with dual Kadrons I had in a '64 Sedan I used to own. Haven't found a system i like as much since then.

I love those small single chamber flowmaster looking mufflers that guys like Shawn Geers has on his blue 63. I always wanted one. Does anyone sell that setup or is it kind of a custom thing? Not as loud as a stinger but more of a raspy throaty muffled sound.

I really like the sound of Spintech mufflers. They sell them with oval inlets and outlet as well, so it fits under the apron a little easier. http://www.spintechmufflers.com/
