While in Vegas at the Bug-O-Rama swap meet I found an MSD 6A box. They guy said he didn't know if it worked but I bought it anyway for $20 thinking that if it didn't I could send it back to MSD for repair.
Well today I tested it and it works!
Now I have a few questions.
Where can I find a rotor for my 009 that does not have a resistor in it. Or does anyone have a part number for one.
What should I gap my plugs to? It says on the MSD website that below 9:1 I can gap them to .060 but that is over double is that right? I am at 8.2:1.
And the last question will the Bosch blue coil work with the MSD box?

ok, here you go. Aircooled .net sells the rotor. I run a .050 gap on my plugs works fine. and I run a bosch blue coil without issue. the one you want is the modified 009 rotor. or you can do the mod yourself.

1+ also remember not to run the solid plug wires! I run .045 plug gap with 12.6:1 compression. Hmm i have been just running a regular 009 rotor whats the mod?

Well I got a non-restistor rotor and I opened up my gap on my plugs to .050 I think I can go wider with the C/R at 8.2:1.
I am running taylor made 8.0 wires and a bosch blue.
It seems to be running fine I will know when I get it on the highway
I dont feel any difference driving it around and it starts the same as before.
Will I need to rejet my carbs now?

I run the Taylor .409 wires on all my VW's they are pretty awesome. I swapped from stock vw ignition to msd blaster 2 and 6AL. I noticed easier start up, engine runs much better at high RPM, and when the engine floods from sloshing fuel in the dunes, the msd gets it burned off better. You would probably have to have a dyno or be at the track to see the HP diffrence.

The mod is removing the resister that is under the epoxy on the top of the rotor the risistor will burn up over time and lesve you without spark

your not taking full advantage of the msd. the blue coil has a built in resistor to keep points from burning up. use the bosch red coil for electronic ignition or any good aftermarket replacement

I am holding out till I buy the new Digital Dizzy from CB Performance. Then it will get good coil and wires. Tax return time or Christmas from the wife.

I used to run 009 with ignitor setup with MSD 6AL and Blaster coil , worked perfectly with std BOSCH wires. I changed to MSD Dizzy with MSD wires and find it performes still better at high Rpms (like over 7000). I think you need the Blaster coil to get the most out of your MSD 6A(L).
