I met Jesse James yesterday, 16MAY06, at the National Guard Joint Forces Traing Base in Los Alamitos, CA. He was thier talking to the SOLDIERS about the new special he did while in theater, Iraq. He was their souping up a military HUMMV for the SOLDIERS. I asked him if he would be coming to the Classic with the bug that was built in Monster Garage, Sour Kurt. He said probaly not but if he dose go he will taking a new air cooled VW police car he just picked up. He said it was a really cool green one. He also said that his new VW police car is his 20th VW he has now! Dose anyone have any info on it? I never would have thought it but Jesse is a really cool guy to talk with, very down to earth.

I STILL can't believe what has become of that Papler vert. There was a 20-plus page thread on the Samba's Rants about it several months ago and I still stand by my opinion that it was wrong...especially considering the paint job is a Maaco special. In reading the article, I think it's cool that they kept all the original running gear and what not, but I really dug the red fire car paint and remember seeing the car when it was still in storage at CE in Arizona back in the spring of '94.
My money is the car was modded just to piss of purists, as there just aren't that many Paplers around anymore. What's the point of shock value?

Ya, Jessie can be a down to earth guy, just treat him the same way as anyone and he is back to you.

I think that if he owns 20 vws thats cool. It will probably help the vw industry. i just wished I owned 1 of his bikes. If he did buy the papler, I bet the seller is stoked. I remember seeing Eddie Van Halen during 1 of the classics taking a cruise in a burgundy and grey 21 window. Or when Sienfield was at the Classic. I wonder how many VWs he owns maybe Lenny Copp knows.

Gotta say Jesse James was cool to my son at Pomona last year. He took the time to sign a shirt and take a picture with him. I think that Papler is cool! If I had the cash, I'd buy a "full-on" resto Heb and stab a VW Paradise turbo motor in it!

Yeah I met him at the ice races in Febuary, when they were racing the icecream truck. Really nice guy. They had planned to do a parde lap, go green and let the ice cream truck lead one lap... then we could go. He said to hell with that, when we go green we race!. He was pitting close to us, the d@mn music was driving me nuts.....lol

Not raising a fuss, Brian, only expressing my opinion. Sure, resto-customizing a Papler is indeed different, but let's face it, how often do you see an old-school Papler with old-school German fire dept. paint? It's about sheer numbers, too, as Paplers are extremely rare compared to a vintage split or oval era 'vert. Red paint wasn't original, but held far more significance than a green Maaco spray job. I gotta admit that I can't help but wonder why the guy chose Maaco of all places to paint the car. Most would agree that Maaco isn't lumped into the same category as "quality" painting. I'm being respectful here, as I know I'm not in the Rants, just my thoughts on the car. I think it would have looked far more bad ass in its current form, lowered, engine, wheels, etc, with the old paint on it.

That's not the one. It's one built by Bruce Braun. Jesse bought a few of his cars. Straight vintage.
