The above photo compilation of Mark Herbert and his SSB was put together in memory of Mark, using various photos from around the Web.

If you'd like to use it for your Desktop background (or "wallpaper"), do the following:
1) Right click the appropriate link below (sized for common screen resolutions of 800x600, 1024x768, and 1280x1024), and choose "Save Target As..."
2) Select the desired location, and save the file to your hard drive.
3) Open the file with Internet Explorer (it's easy to just drag the file into an open IE window), right click the image after you've opened it, and choose the option to "Set as Background"

Click here to download the 800x600 image...
Click here to download the 1024x768 image...

What a cool dude!! Miss ya Man...I was there and took this photo at the DKP III DQ pre Classic for the first time back in '02.There ended up being 2 meets there that week, and I had to be at both! I recoginized Mark from all the "Bean-pole" comments on the old CLF. He introduced me to all the guys there, and I got them to sign my "Cal-Look VW" book. It's my most treasured VW item and fondest VW memory.

I remember first post I read by Herbert back in 1998(?) maybe 99? It said something like "ok let's get past all the whining about 6:1 compression and talk about REAL horsepower"

My favorite quote by him was "want to race calculators?" after somebody posted some jibberish about how big venturies don't work.

never be another Herbert. Long live his spirit.

I'll never forget the e-mails Mark sent me when I was collecting parts to build my engine.  Honest no BS and really trying to help.  RIP Mark......

Another one of my favourite Mark-isms: "What does it take to run 12-second 1/4 miles in a street Beetle? I don't know, I've never gone that slow."

Thanks for the photos-- I wore my Mark Herbert T-shirt on Tuesday, always love talking about him and hearing from folks who knew him longer than the 4 years I called him my friend... This is the last photo I had of his car, it was taken at Irwindale the night before he passed away... I had no idea at that time, of course, but I still consider it very special that I took that pic.

I have a number of decals on my car in memory of him, and think about him often, especially sitting at In and Out until 1AM on a Tuesday night, talking about odd random stuff like the metal lunch boxes we used to carry to grade school (I had Planet Of The Apes at one point), or Saturday morning cartoon shows back in the 70's... He sure did love their french fries there too!

Rest in peace, Mark... we all miss you.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't he the guy who posted here posing as spark ploog?  All he did was argue with with people about engine related stuff.  I never laughed so hard at reading this forum.

Although, I never met Mark, I was at Nick's the night it happened.  I could feel his loss through the crowd's reaction.

Yep, and his first post as the infamous "sparke ploog" was to state that Mark Herbert was full of sh&%t! Everyone was jumping on to defend Mark, but didn't know that it was Mark posting.  Roll Eyes

I dont post to much on here but I was at NIck's that night with all my canadian friends (DVKK boys) and we were waiting for Mark to show and then we heard the chopper overhead and knew something wasnt right. My thoughts are with Mike and all his family. I know some of our clan are down there this weekend tipping a glass to him. He will be missed for sure. Bruce M (DVKK Vancouver, B.C.)

Its funny, I am sad when I think of Mark being gone, but I laugh when I read this stuff.  He was a lot of fun...and that is a good way to be remembered I suppose.

Nice thoughts...I'm glad I got the chance to talk to Mark a few times, very much regret I didn't have more.  I won't feel so bad about having a $10k car that I didn't spend a dime on paint or chrome on after seeing my new wallpaper!

x2... My '70 is rough to look at, but I've had a ball with it in the last eight years I've owned it.  Hope to paint it someday, but for now it's all about the good times. :-)

"Turbo SSB.  It didnt last long, but it was pretty bitchin while it did@!"

My claim to fame was that I was a passenger in the Turbo SSB on its last run, when the engine seized. It was classic Mark:

JP: "Mark, it sounds like she's getting a little tight - do you want to pull over and check it out?"

Mark's response was to simply put his foot in it. Man, did that thing lock up tight! I'll never forget trying to push the wounded Turbo SSB into his storage unit with a spool.

I will never forget that ride.

Or Mark.
