Unbelievable talent. The CLF's vintage distributor guru, Glenn Ring, was brought to tears at the beauty.

How is the advance curve of the distributors effected by turning them opposite of normal rotation like that?

They both turn the correct direction.  Look up further and see the gear drive between the distributors.  The distributor on the right is driven off the stock distributor drive and the second is driven off the first.

Ok, I see it now.  I thought the center gear was the driven gear the first time I looked at it.  That's sharp.

Is the timing variable at both distributors?

My understanding is that it isn't (excluding any advance variances between the two).

Another cool example, and it looks "factory." Is it? I'd guess airplane use - they run twin plugs primarily so that they have a redundant set (safety) - but they run magnetos. If it's custom, they've done a great job.

Apparently each distributor has dual points as well.

I was told you can run 10 deg more timing with dual plugs. Anybody try?

I'm of the understanding you run less total timing and the motor is more efficient, and can run slightly higher compression. A certain type 4 guru claims 14 or 15% more power.

That's my understanding as well. I've also heard that with Type I motors, a good rule of thumb is that you can run one full point more compression, but I have no personal experience and there are obviously many variables.

That's right; big boost in the midrange.

Maybe because timing and compression ratio are related. For example, too high compression and you need to back off timing or it'll ping.

Chuck - I think you violated your NDA by posting "super squishy" -- or an derivative similar in sound or spelling.  Wink Back on topic...

I just love the aesthetics of it. My Dad's 1958 Cesena 182 has a flat 6 aircooled engine running twin plugs with dual magnetos, and it simply looks cool.

Dave's running twin plugs in his new 2.5 liter hot rod engine for his '70 911 and is squeezing those chambers tight.

Hmmm, twin plug 6 volt engine....  Wink
