Hello everyone, it's (Dilbert)  Bill K in NY, been gone for quite sometime, but now I am back.  Grin

Can anyone give me some information on how to identify what type of bug or bus tranny I am trying to identify. Are there serial numbers somewhere on the transmission? if so, where? and more importantly, where can I find a cross reference to look up what year it is and what the tranny came out of.

It's a swing axle, but I don't know the length difference between long and short axle. Since it's in a custom trike, there is absolutely nothing else to help identify this tranny. The outer bearing cap is chewed up bad. I am replacing all the bearings, spacers, seals, etc. and converting it to disc brakes for a old friend.

He installed a 1600cc motor in it last year, so I am "assuming" it is a 12V tranny and I "assume" he has a 12 v flywheel installed. if need be, I will pull the motor to verify that fact, as I recall, the bell housing was smaller on 6v systems 180mm vs 200mm flywheel, am I correct?

The part number on the bearing cap is part number 311501311. It has a smaller hole on the outside to hold back the press in seal, unlike the other caps I have seen. Also it has a large square "tab" protruding off the bottom of the cap.

I am working on the for someone who has even less knowledge on the trike, and I am not very familiar with older swing axle units.  CIP1 lists a cap that looks like it for a type 1 1968 only, (out of stock though)  and  ISP West lists the same cap part number for a early Type 2 tranny. So now I am even more at a loss. It has wide 5 bolt pattern drums on it.

"ANY" help identifying this tranny  would be a great help! I will post pics if that would help, let me know please.

P.S. I used to be on this site 5 years ago, but was taken ill for quite some time and work on My 1968 Bug came to a screeching halt, I want to personally Thank Every One Of You for all for your help back then and hopefully now. It was and still is greatly appreciated all the help you guys (and girls) gave me many moons ago. After I am done with this trike, it's about time I finish my bug that I started 8 years ago, rolling chassis is finally done with a 2332cc screamer waiting for me to tear up the streets once again.
