After some patient problem solving, I've determined that my ground wire for the horn is shorting out. In all my years in VWs I've never had to trouble shoot/replace that wire, and need to know how I get it out of the column to assess it?

My gut tells me to tie some fishing wire to the end of the wire and pull it through, leaving the fishing line attached in order to run a new wire/repaired old wire back through. I hope to be able to repair and reuse the wire, as the wiring in my car is uber virginal, but I won't know until I remove it to assess it.

Assuming that this is possible.

Suggestions?

Thanks, in advance.

Fishing line or a replacement wire will do it.

Thanks Glenn. Is it a straight, simple pull-through?

On a late model it is, so I guess it's the same for your 67.

Why not use some shrink wrap on the offending end?

Yeah, my plan is to do that once I find the short, but I think that it's somewhere inside the column.

Would it be better to replace the wire than repair it.  The wire has to be 40 years old...

Yes, but I'm not that bright, and a stickler for originality. The car's wiring is sooooo beautiful and virginal.

If it's bad, however, it's out of there.

When I'm considering the purchase of a vintage VW, the first thing that I do is pull the horn wire out of the steering column with fishing line and check to see if it is original. Hemmings has a great how-to-tell pictorial... Grin

Hey - don't knock it - I've driven down the purchase price of vintage VWs and Porsches by doing exactly that!  Wink

And I only put NOS, WEST German air in my tires.

You guys are just to strange for me...

I am more interested in it working than the colour of wire...

Pshaw. The guys at the tire shops will brag on filling tires with nitrogen, but I've got a new old stock tank of hydrogen from the Hindenburg hanger... Wink

...also, is "virginal" a double or triple score word in Scrabble?

The horn wire shorting out inside the column plagued me for several months when I was putting my car (71.5) back together.  Insert new fuse, turn key "ON" and the horn would blow then the fuse would pop.  I got so mad I ripped everything out of the trunk and replaced all the wires along with the turn signal switch.   Pulling the wire out of the column revealed it was never connected to the proper place by the PO.
