was there something on the outside of that corner? looks like you got loose even on a 1-2 shift after you turned it around. I think the first of your competition got lucky, sounded like a big lift off the throttle as it went sideways.... not good in a swing car, but maybe that was IRS? i have lifted in a slide.... once.... luckily it was a snowy parking lot and not surrounded by trees

Awesome,
When I lived outside of Asheville NC in the states they had an uphill race to Chimney Rock. It was awesome watching those cars fly up the hill. Never got to take my car up open road style.

I just got on it too soon in the corner, I could do that the day before when it was completely dry, and just get a drift, oh well.. They are all IRS Beetles.

Nah, just turn around and have another go, mind you coming into that corner is 4th gear before back to second, so it's a reasonably fast entry :-)

What Greg neglected to tell everyone is that he was a class winner in the first three hillclimb events of the 2009 New South Wales Hillclimb Championship season. Congrats, mate! How about those Aussie White Knuckle Ride plates?

Eric I actually lived in Hendersonville about 30 miles south down the old I-26 freeway. Went there to open and run a new dealership in 1988.
Bought a house in the middle of an apple orchid. Was a beautiful town just a lot of overcast days. My wife lost 30lbs and was depressed the whole time...
So, we moved to Knoxville TN

You making a "Bucketlist" already? Seriously, do it, not making fun of Khanacross or any of that parking lot sport, but, out on (what used to be) a public road, and going hell for leather at what speed you dare and control yourself , is something else. Not to mention driving it there 400 miles on Pump GAS Don't leave it to late, just do it! They must have hillclimb in the USA, with the SCCA etc? Greg

Never guaranteed another day so live while you can, right? If you don't mind me asking, what size engine and tires are you running? Also how much have you done to the suspension? Them pictures look awesome. I've got a friend that races in the SCCA Circuit. He races Corvairs and is going to Georgia Thursday and coming home Sunday and my brothers going with him. I wanna go, but I don't want to miss school and Saturday night cruse-ins, haha. I just looked on the SCCA website and they're having a hill climb race this Saturday about a two hour or so drive from my house. I'd love to go, but if I went I'd want my camera for sure and my bro is taking it with him to Georgia. I'd also have to go as a spectator being that my beetle has nothing but a stock 1500cc.

I dont think Greg would mind me answering this question for him as his engine and mine were built by the same person and our cars are very simliar, considering both Greg and I have poured a bit of time into each others cars over the years. Gregs engine is a 1916cc donk designed, machined and built by Stan 'the man' Pobjoy of Stan Pobjoy Racing Engineering. Stan only builds performance VW race/street and areoplane engines. His engine of choice would be his 1916 engine, having built thousands of these engines with warranty (yes thats right a performance engine with a warranty - 12000 miles/20000klms). Gregs car runs a VW crank counter weighted and modified by Stan, VW rods, VW rockers and push rods also modified by 'the man'. The cam is one of Stan's own designs specifically for hillclimb racing and the heads are highly modified street eliminators. Big 48IDF cards , aircooled.net exhaust and Stans electronic twin plug ignition. As far as HP goes we dont know yet but mine produced a bees dick under 100kw (134HP) at the rear wheels. Greg's car has a little more HP then mine so we will see when it hits the dyno in the next few months. Tyres are Toyo R spec 888. 195, 50, 15 (med compound). As far as suspension goes its all beetle. Gregs beetle is BJ & IRS. In the front is a lowered and modified beetle front beam (twin adjusters), bigger torsions in the rear, bilstein shocks and whiteline adjustable sway bars front and back. Greg wrote an article for aircooled.net some years ago about setting up the beetle so you could go and have a look there. There is not much to it to get them to handle well. Hope that answers your question. Happy hooning.

How about those Aussie White Knuckle Ride plates? I just thought I would update you. Greg is now the New South Wales (State) Improved Production 1601-2000cc Hillclimb Champion . All in a car he drove to the track, raced and drove home. Congratulations Greg on a job well done. As for the photo above Eric. That is me driving Gregs blue Beetle. Greg very kindly offered me his car to drive at the last minute at that event after his flight got delayed in India. A late entry and a very nice jesture by Greg letting me have my first competitive drive in 12 months (this was the last event I did when you saw me smack the gutter).

Is the car lowered only with the adjustable beam or were dropped spindles used? Is the beam narrowed or original width? Also, are the brakes original drum or aftermarket disc? Thanks! Loved the videos! Charles in McKinney

Whooohooo - way to go, Greg! With all the fans that you're now sure to have at the events in 2010, I'll have to make another trip to Oz to take non-sunburned pics of you for your autograph cards. I'm sure the Tow Truck Captain will be first in line at King Edward Park...

No dropped spindles used. It has two adjusters welded into the top and bottom beam. Is the beam narrowed or original width?
It is a standard width Beetle beam. I dont know of any circuit Beetle running over here that is running a shortened (width) beam. Also, are the brakes original drum or aftermarket disc?
Gregs Beetle runs T3 disks up front and up until recentyl ran T3 drums on the rear. Half way through last year we replaced the rear drums with disks/calipers from a Nissan Skyline.

Thanks Eric, Brilliant photo Sorry I can't break this up, but I also managed to come Runner-Up QLD State Hillclimb Champion 2009 as well. Watch from about 3:45, the white Datsun is before me, a black Beetle after me, then a BDA Cosworth Escort who won the event after him. The White Datsun was about 1.8secs slower than me, the Black Beetle was about 6secs slower than me, and the Escort was about 2secs quicker than me. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IYl0qeklplg&feature=relatedEnjoy, Greg

I was going to edit the previous post but then I thought I should explain something. A lot of guys know I've been on here for a long time, but I don't really think they understood the racing. It appeared (because we do have a lot of Beetles, in fact they have won every Championship for near on 20yrs now, in this class (Improved Production Car 1601-2000cc's)) But I don't believe it was taken as seriously as we do, as if you are just racing another Beetle, it is, well, another Beetle But if you look at the above video, no real racing person will tell me that isn't one serious white Ford Escort, piloted very well by it's owner driver, and with a reported normally aspirated 256RWHP out of 1998cc's in a 950KG+(2094lb) car. The 2" straight from the head exhaust into 3" give some idea about the twin-cam internals and breathing capability If I've got anything wrong, Danny has spies, so I guess he'd even register for Cal-look with an Escort to correct me. Mine is a solid normally aspirated130RWHP out of 1915cc's and 795KG (1752lb) car. We are competing at a very respectable level I'm sure you'd agree, so the mighty Beetles do have serious class competitors, and that's all I wanted everyone to know Oh, and sorry, one important EDIT, I drove my car to that event 350miles from where it was at the time, raced it for 3 days at 8000+rpm, and drove it the 350miles back on pump gas, everyone else in my class trailered their car. Just had to add that in... Greg

Lots of interesting info and history there.
Any more on some of the cars above as far as what Class/Engine Size/Power and Weight they run?
The Notch looks the closest thing to my class over here, the others look like Sports Sedans and what we call Formula Libre (Open wheel) classes.

I'm really angry after alll this time, and you Eric, telling me to pull my finger out, has been the catalyst...
So I went and won a Championship because you pissed me off...
You spurred me on and I thank you for it, but where is the confidence now? you've put my whole car "out there" for all the peeps to see, what were you thinking?
