I'm looking for opinions for a muffler I could use on my 2110cc IDA engine that:

- Has twin pipes that uses the stock, pea shooter apron cut outs
- Preferably work with my Berg 1.5" heater boxes (I drive the car year 'round)
- Looks good
- Sounds good (tuned, deep and mellow, not loud with a bad resonance)

I've seen a few offered, but have no personal experience. I'm in interested to hear from those who have, 1) owned one, and two 2) heard one.

Feedback appreciated. The engine makes approximately 150 HP, and I'd prefer to use a 1.5" system for port velocity (torque).

Thanks, in advance.

John-

I bought the CSP unit back in 2000ish, used it on my 2007 engine. The fit was great and the sound was pleasing. Not very loud at all. I installed it on my ghia and it worked great there also, wish I had kept the exhaust and bought a cheapo for the sale. I know they are pricey but they are nice.

Chuck/Glenn,

Thanks for the suggestions - those are the exact two that I'm thinking of. Both have good reviews in terms of quality and sound, and both are stainless steel. I'm leaning towards towards the Vintage Speed muffler because I'm concerned that the CSP unit will be a pain, as it looks like I'll have to remove the mufflers to adjust the valves. Is that the case, Chuck?

The Vintage Speed unit is also half the price, but it sounds like similar quality.

I was worried about HP loss, due to the apparent reduction of scavanging in the collector, but there are two videos showing a 100 (BHP) Type I on a chassis dyno comparing their system to a common 1 5/8" system with a "Turbo" muffler. When compared to their system, they only lost 1 HP, gained 4 lb. ft. of torque, and reduced decibels by 3.5 db.

Yes, it it's difficult to adjust the valves with the csp unit. Rear wheels must come off and then you can work around the muffler, but it's a chore.

Thanks for the link, John - a fair price.

Chuck,

Thanks - that pretty much kills it for me. I remember when I ran a "Tuck-Away" single Quiet Pack in the late 1980s, and swore that I'd never again run a muffler that blocked access to the valve covers.

Cheers,

I like the whole look of the Vintage Speed unit. The design looks a lot more period correct with the canister shape and location...

that's a real nice looking muffler, but it does look like you may end up with exhaust/soot tarnishing the muffler after time, based on the length of the pipes.

Agreed - it looks like something that might have been built back in the day.

Do you mean bumper? I imagine that it would, but I'm running T-bars, so no problem there.

D'oh!  Yeah, bumper, that's it...lol.  With T-bars you're in the clear, no doubt.

Based on those pics of the FL car, it appears you must remove the muffler before R&R'ing the engine (i.e. not enough clearance from the canister to the rear apron).

That would kill it for me.

Not sure of the spelling, but look into the "Apendorp" systems that were available about 5-6 years ago.  A buddy of mine here in Vegas had one on his 67.  It was pretty dang neat!  The exhaust was sold when he went with a hideaway turbo set up.  I wish I had some pics for you.

A-1 muffler does it too. A friend of mine has a header with muffler using the cutouts, and does hang down behind the apron too. Give Tiger a call.

Cool, and thanks; I had no idea, and would rather support Tiger.

Any pics?

Cheers!

Does anybody have a photo of the Apendorp (sp?) system that I spoke of earlier?  Those are really slick.  I'd love to have one in my parts stash for future consideration.
