I need help! So, after 10 years of scraping and scrounging, I'm finally able to start building the engine of my dreams! She's a 2276 that will be used as a race and limited street engine. I'm hand fitting all bearings and double checking clearances. Now I am at the lifter bores, and they are rough as HELL! (This is a Brazilian AS41 case) I have started to de-burr the bores, but now I feel that if I get them smooth to my liking, they will be too large for adaquate oil pressure. Question..Does anyone have any issues like mine, and if so, how did you deal with them? I've read about builders adding bronze bushings to the bores. Does anyone have any stories to share? Good or Bad..What do you think?
Thanks Smiley

You might try Shag Leone  (909)816-2647,  I'm pretty sure he does the bushings.  He would at least be able to answer some questions.

I had a case years ago that I had RIMCO bush the lifter bores in and it's still making passes down the drag strip today. I think they get about $100 to do it and by the time you pay shipping both ways that's about $70. If the case has all the other machine work done already then it would be worth it, but if it's still a stock case I'd find another one. Just my 2 cents!!

one more thought; if the lifter bores look that bad what about the oil plunger bores? Check that case over good before you put a lot of money in it.

Don't know how true it is, but I had heard the RIMCO uses aluminum bushing not silicon bronze bushings.  The price of the bronze bushings has been going up steadily so it may cost as much as $200 today.  I do know that Brothers Machine does bronze bushings.  I don't know what they charge, but they have a very good reputation!  Steve Hollingsworth did mine and has another case of mine he is doing right now.

Thanks for the replys. Mike, the case I'm using has been bored, clearanced, and drilled for full flow, so I'm in way too deep to start over. By the way thanks for the extra imput about the plunger bores. I checked the Keith's Auto website today and it looks like they offer this service, so I'll probably call Vic for a quote. It'll save alot on shipping charges. And Don...Sure wish you would have bought a chance on the FK87 that I was trying to raffle at Sainfest. I should have tried to do it Friday nite at Wild Wings! Who ever sleeves your bores, get silicone bronze and get your lifters first so the lifter bores can be honed close to the size of the lifters. There is quite a variation in lifter diameters and the lifter bores expand a lot as the case warms, 3/5 thou from 25C to 80C (80 - 180F). Starting with minimum clearances will help with oil pressure and reduce cocking in the bore. FYI I did the testing in the kitchen oven, luckily the new case didn't smell much!

IF I remember right I took my case to Berg and Tim told me to take it to Rimco to have the bores sleeved. They did not use brass, but did a really nice job.
My case was the standard supercase from CbPerformance. The surfaces on the case around the cylinder openings where the cylinders make contact with the case where all uneven. Tim inspected the case and they fixed those surfaces for me as well.
All the little things add up! I would only trust my expensive parts with Gene Berg.......

Another very important issue: STAY AWAY FROM THOSE GARBAGE SCAT LIFTERS.............. Mine where flaking off like a chrome plating!!!!!!! I took them to Rimco and they said they had never seen anything like it!
STRAIGHT FROM CHINA AS FAR AS I AM CONCERNED. I use the two piece light weight Cb lifters and so far they are working very well! Use loc-tite on the circlips!

My old race case was done by rimco it was a long time ago however that case is now a 1776 street motor that has been used for many years. the car is in a resto mode and the engine is waiting to be torn down for a freshen up. i don't think we will see any issues in the lifter bores

Call Vic and take it to him at Radford and pick it up at Farmington that will save you all the shipping.
