Does anyone ever list cars for sale here?
I see the ebay link, but I was wondering if anyone ever sells cars from the forums?

After my 5th bug now, I am looking to get a VW Thing, and get rid of my baja (probably give to a nephew).
There arent that many Thing's out there though.
I have searched samba, type181, and ebay, but either the cars are too far away (I dont have money enough to have them shipped, and cant take off enough work days to drive from far away), or they just arent what I am looking for.

I am in Utah.
I would really like a 1973 Thing with a hardtop, glass windows and a working heater.
Paint doesnt matter (good or bad).
Seats/carpet doesnt matter, as long as all the parts are there.
Must be minimal rust. Floorpans have to be good.
Must be drivable.

If anyone knows of one that qualifies, or has one for sale, could you let me know?

Thanks.
Dave

There you have it, place a wanted ad. There was a person I knew that needed some autostick stuff, but couldn't find anything on the internet. He placed a wanted ad on thesamba, and 20 people contacted him within a week with the parts. He found the stuff he was looking for less than an hour away. Yes, there is an opportunity for someone to take advantage, and jack the price up because they know you are "looking". There is also the chance that someone wants rid of something, and would be happy to sell it cheap/quickly to someone local. When looking for a vehicle, I check all the VW sites, but it seems like thesamba is the "headquarters" for vehicles for sale. The CLF also has great cars for sale, but I've found more performance parts here than vehicles for sale. I would put a wanted ad on thesamba, and craigslist as well. As far as finding a vehicle local, you're looking for a 36+ year old two year only VW, and you will need to greatly expand your "geographic window of availability". It's getting to the point in the Northeast were driving 3-5 hours one way, to get an opportunity to buy a clean car, is not that uncommon. And those are the common VW's like 70's Beetles. Good luck with your search.

Yeah, I placed an ad on samba already.
The problem is time.
I dont have the time to take off work to do a 3 day trip.
I dont mind doing a 1 1/2 day weekend to find one, but that means not more than 8 hours away from me.

Thanks for the advice.

Just missed one right near my work.
He sold it on monday. I contacted him yesterday.

I bought some Thing parts from a dude in the SLC area a while back.  They're out there.

You might also check your local Craig's list and possibly toss out a wanted ad in some of the local Utah Craigs list.  Be careful of scams though - unfortunately Craig's list has a bunch.

Things were fairly popular for what they were-they were bare bones but at $3000-3500 when new back in the mid 70s, pretty expensive. They still managed to sell 30,000 of them for the two years they were sold in the US (73-74) which was quite a bit more than Beetle Convertibles for the same time period. Still, 30,000 is not a HUGE number  and that was over 35  years ago. So  don't expect to be tripping over them, but keep an eye out and they are there.

Where in Utah are you at? I'm located in Provo.  I don't have the info that you are seeking, but have a local site that is WAY better than Craigs list.  Have you looked at KSL.com?  Lots of good stuff on there.  Looks like the only Thing is sold right now, but it sure was clean.  Good luck!

I am in Tooele, but work in Lindon.

I know about KSL.
I just missed that Thing on it by 2 days.

That is a nasty commute! Hopefully something turns up in the near future. There are definitely a few Things around. I see them periodically.
