You wont realize the engine's full potential with those carbs. How much porting has been done?

I assume your going to be drag racing? If your willing to run race fuel, I agree 12.5+
And if your going to be racing, I agree bigger carbs. You have to really try to overcarb a VW that has a 290+ duration cam in it regardless of cc's

depends on what cam you choose. I have almost the same set up I'm running a fk89 cam with forty-eight webs my valves are a little bigger and I am at about 13:1. also you trans plays a factor in putting the power to the ground. Good luck

I say because of the size of the engine 2276 and the valve size 42x37 then you can get away with 10+1 at the low. I would also say a good ignition and some big plug gap and perfect jetting and it should help even more. I believe it's all about being well tuned.

cars going to be for street fun and occassional track....
the octane here in south africa "on the coast" is 95 pump fuel...
so thats why i was told that 9.5 or 10 compression ....or if i use
racing fuel 102 (leaded) that we could advance the timming?

The 44's are just too small to flow the full potential that motor will want at 7,500rpm.
If you are willling to sacrifice top end, then choose a milder cam that will bring the powerband down where you can use it.

You are either: "over cammed" or "under-carberated".
Fix one or the other.
Let your quality of heads tell you wich one to change.
If the heads are really good flowing, then get bigger carbs.
If the heads are average, then go with a milder camshaft.
