Chick magnet! I love it My hair was only long in the '70s, it didn't get big until the mid-80s. You sir, however, get the height award - I salute you.

You know, there is a Zappa-thing going on there, KD And now for something completely different... This week's photo was submitted by Ed Craig, containing business cards from some of the players back in the day, including Auto Haus, Shaky Jake and Jacobs Electronics Click directly on the image to see a larger version inside the postCheers, John http://Cal-Look.com

Glenn Miller submitted this photo, which he shot at a Bug-In in 1981. I love the composition of the photograph, showing the action in the pits with tow vehicles, street cars and race cars. Pure Cal-Look. I believe that the blue dragster may be the ex-Doug Church/ ex-EMPI dragster, but I'm not positive. Anyone know for sure? What to hear the story how I found it and the gang that restored it?

This cool shot was submitted by Ed Craig. It's the Craig/ex-Mahaffy split window in bare metal, presumably during it's transformation from red to green, which I believe occurred during the early '70s. Note the dechromed body, aluminum T-bars, lowered stance and Porsche 356 rims with "nipple" hub caps. Cheers, J

Photo by Glenn Miller. One of my favourite cars of all time - along with Lee Leighton's red car and Tar Babe - Roger Crawford's Bad Company. It had that hybrid street/race look, but was still relatively subtle. Not macho, but focused. No wings, no flares, no B.S. This car needs to be restored back to original. Enjoy, John http://Cal-Look.com

Roger's "Bad Company" was an awesome car. I had the chance to buy it from Roger, complete with the BRM's, a 74 (destroked Okrasa 78.4) x 88 EMPI slipper skirt engine equipped w/ Titanium rods & valves, ZF LSD, 4.86 R/P etc, for what is now a mere $10,000 USD. The list continues with Dean Lowry's Pro-Stock Super Beetle, Dave Perkins Pro-Turbo car, the Kamikaze Kid, Jack Sachette's (sp?) X-19, the Red Sled, Mark Herbert's SSB and the list goes on.
I was offered a partnership in the restoration of the Doug Church / EMPI dragster. Foolishly, I declined as I believed that it should be raced & not sold to an investor to be placed in a museum. Oh well, hindsight is 20/20. At least I kept a pair of EMPI GT valve covers that were be contributed to the project. I have a future build for the GT valve covers.

John,
Apparently, when Roger sold "Bad Company", the buyer removed (butchered, hacked, etc.) off the front end of "Bad Company", a perfectly nice '67. I heard that it was in the quest of weight removal for the intended entry into Super Street. When Roger heard that the guy hacked up "Bad Company", Roger demanded back both doors (reasonable) to save them from the butcher shop.
As I sit here typing this post, I get a queasy feeling that I truly missed an opportunity to have saved "Bad Company" from its inevitable fate. Much like that of Dean Lowry's Pro-Stock Super Beetle, which Don ("I'm a thieving, hack, butcher Assh*le") Cossey did to it. BTW, ask me what I really think, LOL.

This week's photo was submitted by Bob Hoffield, featuring the Outrageous race car. I love it's simplicity and understated nature, featuring chrome 356 wheels, dechromed body work and window trim, lowered front end, M&H Racemaster slicks and one piece windows. I note that it's a DVB car. Does anyone know anything about/remember this car? Enjoy, John http://Cal-Look.com

I remember seeing Bad Company at JCL about 10 years ago, receiving the full Super Street treatment, and yes, there was only a gutted shell remaining when I saw it at Jimmy's garage. By then, the famous green paint was long gone...

And now for something a little different... This week's trifecta was generously submitted by Glenn Miller, featuring the legendary Dean Lowry (of EMPI and Deano Dyno-Soar fame) in a non-VW setting during the early-to-mid 1950s. I have no information on the photos, and would love to hear from some of the old timers (ahem, experience CLF'ers, or anyone else for that matter) who might be able to shed some insight. LONG LIVE DEAN!

Unles I'm wrong, that is a very early blown hemi with the supercharger mounted in front of the engine and driven directly by the crank. It would have been a handful and very fun to drive!

Your not kidding - safety schmafety! Love the '67 above, BTW - reminds me of the '70s (especially the flared, glass fenders). J

Don't think they are actual slicks -- -- just hard tested -- -- notice the difference between the first and second picture -- looks like they had to install some axle braces, LOL those early rear ends just had the tubes pressed in and couldn't handle to much abuse, and also as the pictures go down--check the front end, 1st just spindles 2nd drums added (probably for weight) final pic all the brake package is in place

Let's focus on 1980s Cal-Look engines (photos generously submitted by David Ward). AKA When Bling Was King! Drag Race EnginesHot Mustard Drag Car, 1983 Note the dual 48 IDAs (big surprise); Tayco linkage (by now, becoming de rigueur in the Cal-Look scene); body-coloured firewall, squirrel cage fans and linkage (very '80s), magneto with coloured wires (very 80s) and LOTS of chrome (VERY '80s). Mike Smith's Drag Engine, 1984 Some '80s themes here as well, including: Zolotone decklid and firewall; body colour-coded decklid hinges and squirrel cage fans; and the flashy steel braided hose cover with red and blue ends. Also note the IDAs with Tayco linkage and Santana power pulley. Street Engines Convertible Engine Show Car, 1984 VERY '80s, with body-coloured engine tin, lots of bolt-on chrome accessories, and aluminum fresh air tubes. David Ward's Street Car, 1985 A very clean engine for the mid-1980s, but it still has '80s themes, including: yellow plug wires; chrome generator backing plate, generator pulley, oil filler neck and velocity stacks; and dual oil filters. Note once again the IDAs, Tayco linkage and Santana pulley. And by the way, the stud in the photo with the tight jeans, white high-cut sneakers and feathered hair is David Ward. I can make fun of all of this, because my VWs looked like this as well. I even had the tight jeans and feathered hair, but wasn't tough enough to have a porn-star mustache like David. Cheers, John Plow http://Cal-Look.com

C'mon, Glenn is a sexy beast! Good stuff , John! In order to understand the 80's, you had to be there. It was the good, the bad, and the ugly (now).
As I noted, I'm just as guilty as the rest for VW transgressions in the 1980s. I remember being heavily influenced by Chris Tool's two-tone '63(?) Hot VW's cover car and it's multi-coloured, 2180, dual IDA'd engine. I thought that was the coolest thing, and replicated it (to a much lower quality result). Can you say white engine tin and pop can covering the coil JP (Had pink and purple hair in the early '80s)
