I was in my local NAPA store today and saw this on the counter:

Engine Break-In Oil Additive - TB Zinc Plus
http://www.lucasoil.com/products/display_products.sd?iid=82&catid=9&loc=show

Anyone use this or have any experiences or knowledge of this product?  Lucas products generally have good reviews.

Stuff sells for $13.95 a bottle.  They recommend adding it along with your normal amount of engine oil (you don't withhold some oil) and drive it for 1000 miles.  Drain and replace with your normal oil.  (yes, 1,000 miles on the same break-in oil  Shocked).

In a recent seminar I attended that was hosted by a certified lubrication specialist, according to the API the only time an aftermarket additive should be considered is NEVER.

I could not agree more. These additives disrupt the balance between the anti-wear and detergency packages of the oil and that can lead to issues.

Use an oil with the proper base stock and anti-wear additives and leave the additives on the shelf..

Jake, I just read some of your comments on the samba where you supported the use of ZDDP.  Was your new info mentioned above before or after the samba discussion?  I'm confused....

I've been using ZDDP, but wondered about the Lucas product.  Aren't both additives?

I suport the use of oils blended with the proper base stocks, as well as anti-wear and detergency packages. ZDDP is part of the anti-wear package.

I do not (and have not) supported the use of supplemental additives that disrupt the balance of anti-wear and detergency packages.
