Hi JT,

Guess who's checkin' up on ya from Hawaii ? Cool  I'm having racing withdrawal symptoms, they recently bulldozed the drag strip  Shocked.  Sadly the speedway here is slow and very 'backyard'  Roll Eyes ... maybe that got bulldozed too as it was right next to the drag strip ?  Anyhow it didn't inspire me much at all.  The cops are really putting pressure on the street racers ... what a ya expect ay ?  Angry  Young kids in very fast cars with no track to get any racing experience ?? and yes ... they're killing themselves.  All that testosterone has to go into panties or gas pedals ... the panties almost all have attitude, so the gas pedals get the most.

Anyhow back to the job at hand ... when am I gunna come home for the 'fire up' ?  Grin  I expect the machinin' to be faster than the typin' ! Cheesy  As always, if there's anything I can help with, let me know  Wink

What's with this "Billet crank in Aussie" thing ay ? Shocked  Doesn't the rest of the world know that Aussie's only a little island off the coast of NEW ZEALAND  Huh

Tom

I emailed the guys about the aluminium but man are they proud of their material.  They wanted $80 a piece whereas I was able to source somewhere else for $57.  It looks like we will be trying a different material which is more suited for the job.

The head should be leaving to go to Rader Racing in San Diego California, to have the ports finished off.  I have known the guy 15 odd years and find no fault in his work. He may be a tad slow sometimes (just like me...) but does really good work, worth the wait.  Will post a couple more photos before it goes.

The plan is to have John Rader work the heads up where they can be used on the 4.6 - 5" bore.  When we get it back we will have it digitized then finish machining.

Don... thanks for making yourself available for "bouncing"...

You should have told me the budget was not open Grin  I haven't purchased from them or shopped the local competition for years, so it doesn't surprise me that I'm out of touch.

For future projects like this, from my years in the shops I learned to rely more and more on "precision cut to size" stock to save labor costs. The only down-side is if you don't need it precision sawed to finished size, you're paying for a service you don't need.

It's not question of a open budget . What the problem is New Zealand has a weak dollar against the green back then add in getting it here and the   tax man wanting to get in on the act  $480 US for the material turns into $690 NZ etc

what i plan to do is hold the material in the vise and walk the profile, flip it over then bring it down to size .Which means size can be any thing

the material we will be using is  ALUMEC 89 TOOLING ALUMINIUM which offers - High strength, is hot rolled, heat treated aluminium alloy, cold stretched for maximum stress relieving. does not lose strength over time as 7075 does

I have used Alumec for years (Naturally as I am Swedish...). It is a very nice material to cut in and it is really strong, you'll love it!

once we prove the engine in it's current format  wouldn't mind making a"big block " model as it looks like some people  could be into that .
with the bore spacing we have and the fact that a 5" piston can be run -  if you do the numbers they add up real fast

5" bore and the 'standard' stroke has the potential for quite an engine.  Longer rods and lots of revs could equal great things but I have a question - You mention getting the heads done for the 5" bore ... Are you staying with 2 valves ?  That'll take quite some valve gear to move a 2.6" valve fast enough to realise the potential of the engine I'd say ?  Go on ... tell me you have some 4 valve heads on the drawing board ?

Keep up the good work

And if you do that, why not this at the same time.... All it will take is time and money! Grin

The intended end use for this engine dictates a two valve head , 2700cc engine but with all the work that is required to put a new head together
the plan is to look long term and build the provisions into the package to go "big" at a later stage . Will we go 4 valve ?     Yes with over head cam to boot this allows the removal of material from the lower have of the block and in turn give the crank more throw.
Now if you got the money then we can make the time   Grin

Got the material for the main caps yesterday, guess we will have to make us a set of mains this weekend also plans are to finish the barrels and get the liners in and those out to size . Looks like we will be using software to flow the heads once they come back from John Rader in Diego to get the most of them for flow .The soft ware allows the user flow the heads on the computer make layout changes then rerun the numbers this will save time and grinding .Thank god for the 21st century

Have been slow progress with the barrels. will post pictures over the weekend once all finished . Next will be making up maybe 2/3 cam blanks along with the adjustable gear drive  .Also need to send the crank out to be stressed relieved before it is ground to size
Lots to do need to get after it

Here's the photos of the finished barrel.  We only have to bore it out to size for the sleeve and then we are done...
Back onto the block next...

Does anyone know good supplies for carbon fibre.  I am aware of Fibregast, Aircraft Spruce and Diversified in CA.  Because of the war and airbus, a lot of the carban has been taken up and is hard to get.  Any input is appreciated.   Smiley

Why do we want carbon fibre ? ....... Thinking of using it for push rods ,rocker covers and intake manifold/injectors stacks .we may look at a two piece push rod  to help cut down on flex . Just starting to put so ideas together....

where  are you ? . Donna still has problems posting the photos to your guys site  Spent yesterday making up a boring bar for the mill to bore the linners out . Will be back down at the shop later to do some more . Need to get the cam blanks done plus the gear drive .We have lowed the cam in the block to get away form having to flat spot the cam to clear the crank, because of this we have a idle gear to install otherwise the two timing gears end up beening to large ,want to keep the overall block as short as poss. We will have some shots off the main caps in the am for you    Has anybody used or know of anyone who has used Alumec 89 for rods?

Been working on the Main caps this morning.  Just need to throw some holes and thread and they are done.

I've noticed that there haven't been a many comments on this forum lately.  Just wondering if anyone is still interested.   Undecided  Cause, if not then I will stop posting progress here.

thinking about adding a page to my website with an article instead.

Brian Watts has also kindly offered to add this to his site.

Let me know guys.  It just looks a bit like I'm talking to myself when no-one else is posting (although I have been known to talk to myself now and again.) Grin
