Hello Cal Look guys. I scored this engine off of Craigs list and would like to find out as much as possible before I put it back together. Thanks for your help.

here is a link to the samba forum with pictures.

---------------------------

Just made a sweet score. This 2161 ARPM motor was poorly listed on craigs list for $1500. I could barely contain myself as we started it in the buggy before taking it out. After I traded 15 of my freind named Benjerman, I was off back to the shop to un-rap un early christmass pressent to myself. As I took it appart I was even mare exctied as I found every part to be high quality. I wound how much this engine cost to build back when it was new?

Here is a list of what I found inside:
ARPM case #233
ARPM/ DDS heads with roller rockers
Auto Craft barrels
Venolia 90.5 pistons
Scat 84mm wedge matted and forged crank
nice rods not sure who make them any ideas guys???
Stange push rods that are thick at the lifter and taper down at the rocker
crazy 2 pc presure plate any ideas on this too???
Ray Jay turbo with large weber side draft
fully tigged exhaust and intake

Anything you guys might know about these parts and or engine that you can share with me would be very helpful?Huh

Opps -- just looked at your samba pics -- 2 piece case -- the guys on the cal-look lounge would love those heads and valve covers, probably get your money back on those alone -- just with the case and the multidisc clutch you scored -- that is a real old engine I've never seen an ARPM with autocraft barrells -- those are nice

Don,
Thanks for the info on the rods. Rumor has it you guys built this motor years back for a guy here is San Diego.

I've been thinking about building a period correct Cal-look car, or just parting out this engine. Not sure if the engine is worth more as parts or as a runner?

very possible it came out of our shop... a number of parts seem to fit the sand car era.... 70's to early 90's we sent large number of these to battle at "The Hill", though only a small % with the ARPM case and head combo.

as for putting it on the street keep in mind those parts are at least 25 yrs old and it's anybody's guess whether they are still usable however after a full inspection and some serious considerations regarding temperature control, valve train, and perhaps as n/a (at first anyway)... though some purists may say no, personally I see no reason not to give it shot.

Yea, a few people said it might be a stretch to get it to run cool enough for the street. I've looked the parts over and will do a full cleaning before desiding what way to go. It does not look like this engine has had much time on it and who ever built Pauter or other, the build was high quality and done RIGHT..... We ran the engine before I bought it in the car and it sounded perfect. So who knows I might build and drive it or sell it off to someone that wants to build a sweet period correct racer. Oh yea it was in a hill shooter style rail. and according to the owner was just too fast for him.

Who ever heard of too FAST?Huh??    "NOT"

Im thinking about parting it out...

If I can get enough for the whole deal apart I'll sell it as is. If not I'll put it back together amd make it a turn key like it was when I bought it only all detailed out...

Looks streetable to me. I don't see anything in there that wouldn't live. It would be a nice U/S motor with maybe a bigger turbo.
